Sarah Thompson—an up-and-coming Canadian singer-songwriter—navigates the thin and narrow line between friendship and intimacy, as well as fantasy and reality, on her newest single, “kissing for practice.”
This track is Thompson’s third-ever release, following 2024 singles “emotional capacity” and “bloodshot.” With soft, layered vocals and a warm, simple rhythm guitar, Thompson delicately delivers a personal story about how complex feelings of love overtook a friendship, leaving her to question if what she felt was one-sided. These mixed signals created a strong craving for a reality that wasn’t hers, hoping that one day they would ditch the pretending and practice and actually take things to another level.
On kissing for practice, Sarah Thompson shares:
“‘kissing for practice’ is the coming-of-age story I’ve been eager to tell for a long time. So much of my identity was shaped through this slow-burn, blurry-lined friendship, and it was so difficult to navigate the feelings that came with it in secret. I never knew if it meant nothing or everything to her, but I’m still crossing my fingers that it was the real thing.”
