Every Monday, we bring you a playlist filled with new tracks the Melodic staff has been listening to on repeat. Hear some of our latest obsessions below:
——
Grace VanderWaal, “Proud” – The album begins with a soft introduction through her song “Proud.” The track opens with what sounds like bells from a child’s music box. The vocals represent a dialogue between young Grace and an authoritative figure in her career: “Ground yourself, remember your place / You don’t have a voice yet, you don’t get to say.” After this delicate opening, the track speeds up into a rolling riff, continuing the narrative of how, as a child, Grace had to diminish herself to meet the expectations of those in power around her.

Djo, “Fly” – A standout track on the record for me, and probably my favorite, would be “Fly.” The production here is brilliant, and it immediately reminded me of “Dark Side of the Moon” by Pink Floyd. The song explores the end of a relationship, with Djo choosing personal growth over staying in the relationship for the sake of comfort. Ending a relationship that feels comfortable is always tough, and he captures that internal struggle perfectly. In the chorus, he sings: “This chapter is through / I followed every winding road / And the path it took me to / No, I don’t look back in anger / Do you? / Falling back to her sounds so easy to me / But I must fly / Fly away from her.” The lyrics show both the yearning for familiarity and the brave decision to move on, making it one of the most poignant moments on the album.

——
Miley Cyrus, “End of the World” – The 21st century’s glam rock queen Miley Cyrus has let the world in to another sneak peek of her upcoming visual album, Something Beautiful, in the form of the disco-laced “End of the World.” Cyrus’s once-in-a-generation vocals are set against a glimmer-filled mix of guitars, synths and fun hooks.
– Ezra Kendrick
——
Laufey, “Silver Lining” – After teasing a snippet of “Silver Lining” on her Instagram a few weeks ago, it is finally released for Lauvers — the official fandom name given by Laufey herself — all over the world to enjoy, as well as a merch drop. There are endless gorgeous words in the English language and I will be using as many as humanly possible in this review because there is quite literally no other proper manner to describe how incredibly wonderful this song is.
