Djo, also known as Joe Keery, released his third and final single, entitled “Potion” off his upcoming album, The Crux out this Friday. This marks his third release following “Basic Being Basic” in January and “Delete Ya” in February.
The impressive range of sounds and themes found in each of the singles he’s released thus far leave every listener wanting more, anticipating each and every note. From the synth-y earworm that was “Basic Being Basic,” providing tounge-and-cheek commentary on oftentimes exhausting celebrity culture; to the poetic lyrics of one-sided heartache, in “Delete Ya” that share the pains of yearning for a place and person from your past, that, for better or worse, you can never return to.
Musically, “Potion” is able to stand on its own two feet, even when compared alongside its earlier counterparts. It sets itself apart through the distinctive strums of delightful acoustic guitar, which is perfectly complimented by Keery’s signature synths and drums.
Within the songwriting, we are pleasantly surprised with charming, sensitive, and introspective lyrics throughout. The main idea within the track is Keery sharing his lifelong, but so far unsuccessful, search for a love that’s devoted and true, which only getting more difficult.
He expresses his exasperation in regards to the oftentimes insincere nature of high-profile celebrity couples in the second verse. Instead, valuing authenticity and companionship In whoever his future soulmate might be. His simple, yet seemingly unattainable, request of finding “someone who leavеs on the light for me” is relatable to so many who find themselves endlessly searching for their other half in today’s day and age.
Coinciding with his album release, Djo will also begin the US leg of his Back On Your Tour. Djo is also slated to perform at Lollapalooza on August 3, Soundside Music Festival on September 27 in Bridgeport, CT and Laneway Festival in Australia.
