Maren Morris takes us to church with “carry me through”

Date:

Maren Morris released her brand-new song carry me through on March 27 via Columbia Records. The single is the first taste of her highly anticipated fourth studio album, D R E A M S I C L E, set for release on May 9.

The piano-heavy ballad, co-written and produced by Greg Kurstin, is an emotional track reflecting Morris’ journey through hardship. She revealed that she wrote the song in early 2023 before facing significant personal challenges. Alongside the single release, Morris debuted a music video that starts in black and white before transitioning into a golden hue, symbolizing her struggles and eventual clarity. The video ends with a radiant smile on her face, representing her journey toward healing.

“Yeah, I know tomorrow’s gon’ come / Preaching to a choir of one / It’s taken me a while, I’ll get there soon / Yeah, I got friends around / Plenty of hands held out / But I’m still the one who has to choose / To carry me through,” Morris preaches in the chorus.

In a statement shared via her fan club newsletter, The Lunatics, Morris wrote:

“hi – i can’t believe this project is starting to come out into the world. “carry me through”, the first song from my upcoming album D R E A M S I C L E, is out now! this was written in early 2023 before a lot of s–t went down. I really do think sometimes songs are premonitions. I wanted to address some anxieties I was having but also give myself some peace by saying “it’s not all on you right now. lean on safe people.” I posted a snippet of it right after the election on IG stories and received so many messages from you all saying even just the verse was exactly what you needed to hear, so here it is, finally. thank you for carrying me through. – m”

Tonight (March 27), Morris will attend the GLAAD Awards in Los Angeles. To commemorate the new track, she is collaborating with GLAAD and Trans Lifeline on a limited-edition T-shirt available on her website for the next 72 hours. All proceeds will be donated to both organizations.
