Alabama-based producer, artist, and songwriter Flight Volume has collaborated with singer-songwriters Jordan James and Joshua Golden for his newest single, “Wasted,” released March 14. Adam Gabriel Shinn, the artist behind the Flight Volume project, has been producing music since he was 13 years old and has worked with artists like Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist Twista and Sleeping With Sirens’ frontman Kellin Quinn. Flight Volume says, “I love to bring you collabs that you didn’t know you needed,” and this holds true for his latest track.
“Wasted” starts off softly with an acoustic guitar, with the song quickly picking up the pace with some drums as the vocals come in. The vocals are reminiscent of the style The Kid LAROI, but with softer, smoother edges. The instrumentals of the pre-chorus calm back down as we hear the lyrics “I don’t need alcohol to realize I’m not fine.” This line makes clear what will be the overarching theme of the song: the narrator is turning to alcohol to ease the pain of a lost love, and the word “wasted” quickly takes on a double meaning. The layered vocal harmonies in the chorus have a dreamy feel as he sings “all my love feels wasted / tonight I’m getting wasted.”
The second verse leans into more of a pop rap sound, with a more obvious beat as the tension grows. The final chorus is cinematic, tying together all the elements of the track seamlessly with layered vocals and crashing drums that sit in the back of the mix to fill out the space without being overpowering. The intensity of the finale punctuates the level of pain and desperation the narrator feels.
Flight Volume has brought us yet another amazing collaboration, and we can’t wait to see what he does next.
