Started as a solo project by singer-songwriter Thom Olenik, funeral commercial has since grown to a four-piece band creating a sweeping array of multifaceted modern shoegaze. “fumble” is the first single off their upcoming album Dead Before I Die, and it features an evolved sound from the band; it’s an emotional track that is as smooth and dreamy as it is gritty and dissonant.
Deeply rooted in the Akron, Ohio, DIY scene, funeral commercial have been steadily expanding their sonic repertoire up until the present release of “fumble,” which I think is some of their most exciting and fully realized music yet. All cylinders are firing with brazen guitar riffs, powerful drumming, and a bass line that keeps the chaos in check. The track uniquely blends shoegaze and emotionally screeching Midwest emo tendencies to create an undulating journey that ends in sweet catharsis. Olenik adds about the track:
“I think it can be generalized and boiled down to social anxiety and emotional hardships leading me to isolate myself… It’s also maybe about drug dependence/abuse and needing it to be social, then using it to replace being social entirely.”
The first time I saw funeral commercial live was outside in the pouring rain on a porch. Having fallen for the gloomy atmosphere and the surreal sound I encountered that day, the band continues to pioneer their brand of Midwest shoegaze. “fumble” has me looking forward to the band’s new album and what’s still to come.
