NYU and Sony launch the Sony Audio Institute

Date:

New York University (NYU) and Sony Corporation have announced the establishment of the Sony Audio Institute, a collaborative initiative designed to advance innovation at the intersection of technology, music, and business. This partnership, supported by a $7.5 million contribution from Sony, Sony aims to prepare the next generation of creators and innovators within NYU’s “Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.”

The Sony Audio Institute will serve as a hub for interdisciplinary collaboration, merging Sony’s expertise in professional and consumer audio with the academic and research strengths of NYU’s students and faculty. The institute plans to enhance classroom experiences with cutting-edge technology, support pioneering research opportunities, and deepen connections with New York City’s vibrant entertainment community through events and workshops.

A key feature of the institute is the establishment of the “Sony Audio Institute Studio” at NYU’s Brooklyn campus. This state-of-the-art facility will be equipped with Sony’s 360 Reality Audio and 360 Virtual Mixing Environment technologies, providing students with hands-on experience using industry-leading tools.

The institute will also offer scholarships, internships, and research fellowships to students in Steinhardt’s Music Business and Music Technology programs, aiming to prepare them for emerging roles in the evolving audio industry. Larry S. Miller, a clinical professor at NYU Steinhardt and director of the Music Business Program, will serve as the inaugural executive director of the Sony Audio Institute.

This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to fostering creativity and technological advancement in the audio sector, providing students with unparalleled opportunities to engage with cutting-edge technologies and industry professionals.
