Berlin-based Ina Forsman has released her third single ahead of her upcoming album After Dark Hour. Titled “Freedom Manifesto,” the tune uses elements of psychedelia along with Forsman’s retro soul sound to create a euphoric atmosphere.
A voice memo kicks off the song as a narrator declares “Freedom now movement hear me.” The syncopated drums are the star of this song. With Teppo Mäkynen behind the drum set, the quick moving beat and tight sound make the song fast and exciting. The organ synth gives the song its harmonies and lets the rest of the instrumentation have a chance to move about without feeling empty. The guitar is heavily influenced by the psychedelia of the 1960s and 70s and decorates the song beautifully.
With heavy fuzz and amps in the line input of the guitar, the sound is like ear candy that complements Forsman’s honey like but strong vocals wonderfully. Freely panning between left and right constantly, the guitar melody also works well with the song’s theme of freedom. A bass line works as a counter-melody against the guitars and fulls out the lower frequencies since there aren’t as many horns in this song as Forsman’s previous singles.
Lyrically, the song is a ode to creative freedom, a message perfectly suited for an independent artist. The song features several affirmations in the pre-chorus, including “I’m higher than any number,” which adds to the power associated with freedom that Forsman advocates for. In the bridge of the song, the soul artist states “Mammy I have to go / You have to set your daughter free,” showing a woman ready to face the world. These lyrics may not be fancy, but they help create the electrifying energy Forsman is known for.
If you want to catch “Freedom Manifesto” live, Forsman is currently on tour across Europe till April. The single is set to be featured in After Dark Hour releasing on the 11th of April. “Freedom Manifesto” by Ina Forsman is out now wherever you find your music.
