Recently signing with London-based Project Melody Music, Jess Ball is turning a new page in 2025 with her second release of the year, “Over You.” An electronic-fueled single, the new track captures the emotional back-and-forth of moving on after a breakup.
Opening with a piano loop, the punchy drum beat kicks in along with Ball’s voice. The vocals are both airy and smooth, cutting across the biting instrumental. The changeup happens in the chorus when the bass kicks in, giving it balance and structure while adding hints of R&B to complement Ball’s vocals. Subtle electronic elements are also added to the chorus, fitting Ball’s signature style, and giving another layer of subtlety to a relatively straightforward track.
Lyrically, it’s about what you expect: Ball is singing from the perspective of being broken up with. Clearly still having contact with this other person, this is a strained one-sided dialogue that maintains an air of pining toxicity, highlighted by the end of the chorus: “Don’t tell me it’s too soon / It wasn’t too soon for you.” Ball adds about the new single:
“’Over You’ is about the adjustments you have to make and the habits you have to break in order to better yourself and grow after a breakup. There’s no rulebook… Everyone moves on in their own way.”
A refreshing breakup track fit for the complexities of navigating a relationship in the modern era, “Over You” is danceable in way that makes you want to yell and scream alone in your bedroom.
