So far, Maddie Regent has had a dynamic rollout of her debut album, On the phone with my mom, which is set to be released May 16. She has dealt with self-sabotage on “Sleeptalking,” explored the fragility of love on “You could break my heart,” confronted an ex on “The wolf,” and relived a former relationship on “Turtleneck.” These singles have provided fans with an idea of what they will experience on the album, from the vibrant worlds Maddie paints with the music to the introspection that is shared in the lyrics. For her next single, Maddie searches to justify her heartbreak.
Sometimes, the worst thing you can do is expect the inevitable, which is just what Maddie does on “The other shoe.” The track begins with acoustic guitar before taking on an immersive pop groove and filling out with skittering beats. It is all tied together by twinkling riffs and Maddie’s emotional vocals, as she anxiously waits for heartbreak. She sings, “In over your head / Yeah, you get what you get / Don’t say you don’t deserve this / You did it on purpose.”
Telling us more about the inspiration for “The other shoe,” Maddie explains,
“You’re constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop–almost hoping it does, so you can finally move on.”
