With larger-than-life musical talents, Lisa Crawley has reached audiences both on stage and on screen. The New Zealand native has performed with the Auckland Symphony Orchestra, been nominated for four APRA Silver Scroll awards, played an on-screen musician in NBC’s This Is Us, and opened for artists like John Mayer and Jools Holland. Her music has also been featured in shows like Good Trouble and Devil in Ohio, as well as in movies like Waru and The Last Days of Capitalism. Just last year, Lisa’s singles “Boy Don’t Cry” and “Hey You” made their way onto Los Angeles’ KCRW, where they captivated audiences and expanded Lisa’s reputation as an ever-growing indie-pop artist. Additionally, “Hey You” was a featured track in Rolling Stone AU. She is now gearing up to release her new EP, New Girl Syndrome, which will arrive April 25.
The first single from the project is “What You Can Do,” which is an empowering piano-based ballad. The track flaunts Lisa’s emotional yet sophisticated style, mixing vulnerable lyrics with refined indie-pop sensibilities. While her vocals are exposed and lonely, there are pieces of optimism that shine through as she remembers to go easy on herself. With a tenderhearted timbre, she sings, “You can only do so much, baby / You’ve got your work cut out for you / Take a breath, in fact, go and take two / You are more than what you can do.” You can watch the song come to life in the video below, which was filmed at Joshua Tree and directed by Will Cook.
Expanding on the single, Lisa shares,
“I wrote ‘What You Can Do’ about the constant questioning of my identity outside of my career as a musician and the struggle of saying no to work or people/situations that you don’t want to be in. The best time to listen is when you’re coming home from an overwhelming day at work; when you need encouragement to say no to someone or something; or after that weird gig you should have said no to.”
