The multi-instrumentalist duo of Ash Wallace and Gabriel Everett, also known as Foley, return with the release of “That’s Life, Baby!,” the title track to their highly anticipated sophomore album.
With their signature blend of experimental sound design, indie pop production, and a broad range of influences, Foley boasts what they are calling “a grittier brand of pop.“ “Thats Life, Baby!” is an intro into an album showcasing groove-inflected alt pop with lyrics that are at once personable and highly relatable, if not a little bit toxic. They open up about the track saying,
“It’s about unrequited love but from the perspective of the person not feeling it. We started with the idea of dating as purely selfish and fun – not doing anything that you don’t want to do just to save someone’s feelings. At the end of the day we all fall in love and it doesn’t always go to plan – that’s just LIFE babyyyyy.”
Perfectly encapsulating the wishy-washy dating world of today’s era, pop brilliance explodes in the contrast between Foley’s sonics and lyrics. The chorus is super catchy with slightly edgy lyrics built for this ‘villain song’: “I’m not the one to trust baby / I never said I was baby… / That’s life, baby!”
At the end of the day, “That’s Life, Baby!” is a perfect album starter, fit for opening the door on an exciting duo that is pushing the boundaries of pop music. Foley should be mentioned right up there alongside artists like Caroline Polachek and Charli XCX for their newest innovative contribution to the alt pop landscape.
