With her upcoming EP LOVEGRUNGE set to release soon, Stockholm’s Amanda Cy has shown a gentler side to her usual uptempo music in new single, “Ride.”
Channelling her inner Steve Lacy and Remi Wolf, Cy starts off the pop song with a crunchy kick and snare drum. As a smooth bass line and reverbed guitar join the mix, it becomes clear that this song has a lighter texture than previous releases. On the song, Cy described writing in a “beautiful house by the water” and this can easily be felt in the sparkly synth and electric keys. Cy’s vocal delivery adds to this calm, serene tone. The focus on pacing with some fun movement in her vocals sits with the rest of the mix beautifully.
“The lyrics are kind of desperate and worried,” says Cy, a contrast to the “very dreamy and laidback” instrumentation. Cy starts the song with “Wait / I know what you’re about to say / hit the brakes,” establishing her heartsick state as she expresses concern over a flourishing relationship. The second verse’s use of analogies like, “before you slide / show your cards,” gives Cy the chance to continue the world-building of the story set up in the first verse. These worries are summed up in the chorus, “Baby say that you’re down for the ride,” expressing Cy’s overall want; to be loved without fear.
“Ride” is a new, smooth and fun sound for Amanda Cy as she sets herself up to release her forthcoming EP LOVEGRUNGE. The overall sparkly tone against some tense lyrics creates a softer and well-paced song. LOVEGROUNGE is set to release later this year and you can listen to “Ride” now, wherever you find your music.
