Finneas brought his For Cryin’ Out Loud! Tour to Boston at MGM Music Hall on February 21. With some of the audience having been lined up since 9 am, you could already tell that the energy in the room was electric.
Bad Suns kicked the night off playing a 35 minute set that included some of their biggest hits including “Baby Blue Shades”, “Life Was Easier When I Only Cared About Me”, and “We Move Like the Ocean”. They brought a funky, dynamic start to the night as there were a good amount of people near me in the crowd singing every word to their songs. It was clear that the night was going to be insane.
Up next was the man himself. He started his 1 hour & 20 minute set with the song “Starfucker”, the first song off of his new record, For Crying Out Loud!, which he played solo on piano. Screams & “I love you’s” were heard throughout the crowd the second he hit the stage. From that moment on, I knew he would have the crowd in the palm of his hands for the rest of the night.
This was the sixth night of his tour and you could tell that the “first few nights of tour jitters” were non-existent as he performed his entire set flawlessly. After the opening song he would play a few more deep cuts from his new album including “Lotus Eater”, “Cleats”, and “Sweet Cherries”.
“Boston this is the biggest venue we’ve ever played and you sold it out!” said Finneas as the crowd erupted in applause. This marks Finneas’ third headlining show in Boston. Yes, he’s played here many times with his sister, Billie Eilish, but 5000+ people filled up a venue right next to Fenway Park just for him and Boston gave him all the love in the world.
He would go on to play a few fan favorites including “Angel”, “The Kids Are All Dying”, and “Partners in Crime”. With his intimate stage set-up, Finneas made the biggest show of his career feel like a small club. “You better work diva!” a girl next to me shouts to him, which makes him and the entire audience start giggling. Finneas shared with the crowd that he has uncles from Boston and would visit them once a year, bringing him to this magical city a lot throughout his childhood. He also revealed that he had a mild obsession with Paul Revere as a kid. “It must be so funny being an adult and meeting a five year old and being like: ‘What are you into? Are you into trains? Are you into astronauts?’ and you have to be like: ‘No, Paul Revere.'” Finneas states with a chuckle.
We’re nearing the end of the show. Finneas starts playing what is personally my favorite song he’s ever been a part of, “Till Forever Falls Apart”, a collaboration he released in 2021 with the singer Ashe for her debut record, Ashlyn. I’ve heard Ashe play this song solo, so it was pretty cool to hear his solo version of it. The audience was screaming every word. Finneas even held the mic out at certain points so he could hear just the crowd singing along.
“We’re not that deep into this tour. We’re only six shows in…but it’s going to be tough to top Boston.” said Finneas as the crowd erupted into cheers. “And if anybody’s like: ‘Oh, this motherfucker’s pandering. I bet he feels this way about every city.’ I do not!”, he continued. To close the night, Finneas performed the title track of his new album. “Sing along if you know it” said Finneas before starting his final song of the night.
All in all, I highly recommend seeing Finneas live if he comes to your city on this tour. He takes you on an adventure through his three records in one incredible night and I was so glad to be a part of the ride.
