sorrycarlee knows her worth in “Notch”

Date:

Songwriter Carlee Chappell has returned to her solo project sorrycarlee to release “Notch,” a cheeky and fun song reminiscent of the pop found in the late 2000s. The song is uncomplicated, using easy-to-follow instrumentation to accompany lyrics about a date gone wrong.

sorrycarlee wrote the song when she was 18, “after a boy I dated told me I was ‘just an object’ to him ‘like a comb or a refrigerator.'” That last comparison is the first line of the song as sorrycarlee asserts that she’s more than a “notch in your belt.” The lyrics are filled with comedic and witty analogies and metaphors that give the song its lighthearted tone despite the subject matter. Fans of Sabrina Carpenter and early Taylor Swift will find amusement in the playful lyrics.

The instrumentation of this song is simplistic and doesn’t try once to take focus from sorrycarlee’s lyrics. A doubled guitar starts off the song. Soon a piano, electric guitar and bass join before a kick drum speeds up the pace. Overall, the instrumentation doesn’t try to do anything extraordinary. This can become monotonous to listen to after a while, but it certainly doesn’t damage the song in any way. Overall, the instrumentation sits well within the confines of the pop genre.

“Notch” is sorrycarlee’s second release with more set to come. You can listen to “Notch” now, wherever you find your music.
