Slow Coast—a indie beach rock band from San Francisco—is over the lies and the universal need to craft a flawless life on social media. In their groovy new single “Perfect Lie,” they dive into the toxicity of comparison and the importance of not feeding into fake narratives by embracing the truth through lyricism.
As a band focused on bringing an upbeat indie rock sound to the table, they look to popular indie rock bands such as The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys and Tame Impala for inspiration. With vocals comparable to Chris Martin from Coldplay and a sound reminiscent of The Strokes, this band draws in listeners from different sides of the indie realm.
“Perfect Lie” sets the indie scene from the start with a bouncy bassline, smooth electric guitar and an accompanying simple, flowing drum beat. Apart from the head-bopping rhythm, the lyricism shines through to relay an important, thought-provoking message.
Early on in the song, the lyrics “But out there / It’s hard not to compare / Even when real becomes rare” describe the struggles of comparison and how it can become consuming and spiral into the generation of lies. However, that verse is challenged by the chorus: “Now I won’t hide behind this perfect lie anymore / I won’t blind you watch me try and fail some more / C’mon tell me what we are performing for / ‘Cause I won’t hide behind this perfect lie anymore,” making it clear that they are done with falsely idealizing their lives on social media and are instead prioritizing sharing nothing but the truth.
