French producer harrry has teamed up with singer Sugah to create a fun lo-fi pop song, “all i had.” Taking reference from artists like beabadoobee and girl in red, “all i had” utilizes harrry’s history as a DJ with its addictive sound and mellifluous tone.
Starting off with a filter fading in the constantly moving synths and electronic keys, the rich soundscape of the song is quickly established. The psychedelic-style guitars give a nice sharpness against the full and warm sound of the lead synth. By keeping the guitars static, harrry also allows for the lead synth to pan back and forth, decorating the song. A quiet but important bass line gives the song a subtle ground to work off of, allowing for all the ornamental sound to be sprinkled throughout the single. The heavy use of automation in the filters and other audio effects lets the song have a change between verses whilst ensuring that the full soundscape doesn’t become overwhelming.
Fitting well into the lo-fi and bedroom pop sound of the single, Sugah’s soft vocal delivery complements the instrumental mix. The focus is clearly on the melody of the lyrics, ensuring that the ascending movement of the chorus works with the change in instrumental pace. The lyrics “dividing all my consciousness / begging for your grace” give insight to a relationship becoming distant and falling apart. The only downside of this song is that it ends a bit abruptly following the final chorus; cutting off quickly rather than bookending the beginning with a fade.
Still, this song highlights harrry’s and Sugah’s ability to fill out a song with fun synth work and catchy melody. You can listen to “all i had” now wherever you find your music.
