We were introduced to a new phase in Madisyn Gifford’s career when she released “Seventeen” last summer. While the single contained that honest yet vulnerable edge that Madisyn’s fans have come to know in her music, it also leaned into a new sound for the Vancouver-based singer-songwriter. Madisyn traded in her usual pop-based elements for those more folk-derived, which she then applied to follow-up releases like “Fast One” and “Glad You Got Away.” These songs will all be included in a bigger project that is set to be released later this year. For now, Madisyn is prolonging the hype and expanding the anticipation by dropping another special single from the project.
On “Die Happy,” she has reached a place in her life that is filled with joy. The song was co-written and produced by Jared Manierka, and it contains the warmth and excitement that is customarily found at the beginning of a new relationship. Madisyn sets a commonplace scene with lines such as, “Dishes in the kitchen sink,” “Laundry hanging on the line,” and “Wearing your white button up tee.” Yet, there is much love found within, as expressed in the choruses of, “You smelt like orange juice and whiskey / Right before I asked you to kiss me / ‘What’s a moment you won’t forget?’ / You say, ‘I think I’m looking right at it.’”
About “Die Happy,” Madisyn shares,
“I had been in pretty a dark place before writing this song, and when I wrote the initial idea, it was coming from a place of reprieve. I felt like I had just seen the sun for the very first time after the darkest winter, and I remembered how good it felt to feel good. It felt I was experiencing the honeymoon phase of a love affair with my own life. Jared and I worked through 10 versions before landing on this, and I’m so thrilled with how it turned out. It feels like the kind of song I would’ve loved as a kid – full of summer, nostalgia, and hope.”
