After the success of their second album Cuts and Bruises and a busy touring year supporting artists like Harry Styles, Arctic Monkeys, Pearl Jam, and Sam Fender apart from their own tour, Dublin-based indie/alt band Inhaler has released their highly anticipated third album, Open Wide.

The band, consisting of lead vocalist Elijah Hewson, bassist Robert Keating, lead guitarist Josh Jenkinson, and drummer Ryan McMahon, has pushed their sonic boundaries on this album, offering something different for fans both old and new. Produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Kid Harpoon, known for his work with Harry Styles and Florence & The Machine, Open Wide takes the band’s sound in an exciting new direction.

The 13-track album showcases a more synth-heavy, pop-oriented sound that introduces new textures and layers not previously heard from Inhaler. At the same time, Open Wide maintains the band’s core indie/alternative spirit, blending fresh elements with their fan-favorite sound.

The album kicks off with “Eddie in the Darkness,” a track that sets the tone for the project with upbeat tones, airy harmonies, and an exploration of the new sounds the band has incorporated. The second track, “Billy (Yeah, Yeah, Yeah),” channels an 80s and early 90s indie influence, with a catchy melody, mellow guitar, and heavier pop elements than Inhaler has previously had.

The fifth track, “Even Though,” stands out for its prominent use of synth, which the band has embraced more than ever before. This song is a unique blend of synth melodies paired with Elijah’s indie/alt-led vocals, offering fans a surprising twist from the usual guitar and drum heavy tracks. The more experimental elements here may come as a surprise, but it’s a welcomed sound in this project.

“Again” offers a refreshing change of pace. With a more folk-rock-inspired feel compared to the rest of the album, this track features raw lyrics and a stripped-back acoustic guitar in the background. It provides a moment of reflection and intimacy right in the middle of the album.

The title track, “Open Wide,” stands out as one of the most striking on the album. With its psychedelic rock tone and it sitting as the longest song on the album at almost five minutes, it blends haunting vocals with candid lyrics, making it one of the most compelling moments in the project.

This album is also filled with nostalgia for indie and alt pop fans, but it introduces a surprising twist with the track “X-Ray,” which holds a country-rock-inspired melody. The country fusion melody isn’t entirely new for Inhaler—they experimented with a similar sound on their sophomore album with “If You’re Gonna Break My Heart.” The band’s willingness to blend indie rock with country elements has become almost like an Easter egg of sorts, showing their openness to different genres while staying true to their roots.

The last track on the album, “Little Things,” really is the cherry on top. This is the heavier indie rock-inspired song with a rustic electric guitar melody that encompasses the sound fans come to life with at live shows.

Overall, Open Wide is an incredibly cohesive project. While it introduces more experimental sounds, the album remains grounded in the indie and alt sound that has made Inhaler so beloved. It’s the perfect balance of old and new, showcasing the band’s genre-blending skills. Open Wide offers something fresh for longtime fans and new listeners alike.

Inhaler will kick off their Open Wide US tour in early March, starting in Portland, ME, giving fans the chance to experience this exciting new chapter of the band live.
