Emo/pop-punk band Grave Secrets released their new single “S2L” last Friday. Hailing from the Los Angeles scene, rich in rock history, Grave Secrets are relying on the pre-established sound that strengthened the genre. With a fast-paced tempo and rushing spoken-word, coupled with the west-coast stresses on certain syllables, this band is keeping up with the tone of many early-aughts bands.
Despite releasing their first LP, Til Your Lungs Fall Out, just last year, Grave Secrets continue to develop their craft. “S2L” follows the release of two new singles, “Stuck Inside,” released in February, and “TICKET,” released in March.
Reminiscent of a blend between Linkin Park, The Used, Jimmy Eat World and Good Charlotte, Grave Secrets’ ensemble equally contributes to crafting this sound. Vinny Morales’ shout vocals coated in rasp capture deep angst, while Kevin Casteñeda and Carlos Bayona, drummer and bassist, respectively, build the foundation for the upbeat, high-energy tone. However, none of this sound would be achieved without the underscore of Kevin Gonzalez’s 2000s-style electric guitar notes.
The track itself, produced and co-written with Alex Estrada, tackles issues of knowing one cannot bear holding onto past memories of knowing they have wronged someone. Morales sings, “there’s no coming back, there’s no way,” as he dwells on the idea that he cannot change what has already happened. However, defends himself in lines like, “I told you I’m nothing / I’m just a messy human.”
Morales sporadically delivers personal lyrics that further reflect the inner torment he feels. For example, he sings, “my life’s crashing down right in front of me / I’m losing myself to fleeting memories,” as he cannot help but feel consumed by the guilt and disappointment.
Most compellingly, the recurring hook leaves a lasting impression, pondering the truth behind silence: “If people stopped to think twice / Wouldn’t it be alright / If we all just stopped pretending we’re fine.”
Ultimately, Grave Secrets is setting forth nostalgic pop punk sounds with angst-filled remorse in their new single, “S2L.”
