Brighid Fry, better known as Housewife, has released a new alt-pop single “Divorce,” and it is absolutely euphoric. The Canadian artist is only 21 years old but their music is introspective beyond their years. This alt-pop anthem truly showcases the evolution of their music, still holding a sound that’s authentic to their old music but still setting the listener up for their new era of music with their upcoming EP set to release in the spring of 2025.
One thing that stands out within the musical composition is definitely the contrast in the instrumental melody. It’s a heavier, lower-registered sound but it’s contrasted with her vocals. The vocals are light and airy while the song has a more rigid structure, with rougher electric guitar sounds, heavy bass, and lingering echoing synths throughout. Having these two opposing sounds adds an interesting emotional core to the song.
Lyrically, the song is very vulnerable underneath the bright pop sound. There are themes of the loss of a partner or special person that you let into your “home” or safe space, and then being kicked out of said place by the same person. The song explores trying to navigate those emotions with the lyrics “You were waiting to attack / well I’m not the enemy / why’s it gotta be so hard to let it be / why’d you have to give so much then give up on me.” This level of vulnerability is one the audience can enjoy on a human level, as it’s a feeling many can relate to.
Overall, the song’s melody and vocals, while contrasting, truly blend beautifully together. This also teases just what we can expect to see musically in future projects during the new year.
