Emyrson Flora opens up about finding closure on debut EP ‘every song is about you’

Date:

Sometimes, when you least expect it — or want it — life can take such a whirlwind turn that it changes you. It can feel infatuating. Emyrson Flora continues to captivate fans with her latest releases, just a month after Melodic Mag sat down with her to discuss her third single, “for keeps.” Now, she returns with her debut EP, every song is about you, where she fights through a toxic relationship, and fittingly, “every song is about you.”

For Flora, creating every song is about you felt like tying a bow on the project — meaningful and cohesive. Listening to the EP, you’re drawn in by her mesmerizing bridges, thoughtful songwriting and introspective sound. It makes you question your reality, heart and mind. Released today, Nov. 22, the EP sees the 19-year-old taking listeners on a journey of love and heartbreak — an experience so profound, it inspired an entire collection of songs.

This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity and time.

Congratulations on the EP! It’s finally out. I know we talked last time, and you were prepping for it and getting it ready. How is it feeling now that it’s out? You’ve got three songs out already and two new ones with this project.
Yeah, I’m really excited. It’s been such a long time coming, and I’ve been working on these songs for over a year and a half now — maybe even longer. Some of these I wrote when I was 16 at home. So I’m just very eager for it all to be out in the world and to continue to share new music because I have so much.

It’s definitely been funny trying to navigate being in a new era while promoting stuff I’ve had for so long. So that’s been really interesting and fun. I’m just really eager for everyone to hear it and to see everyone’s opinions.

You’ve had the three songs come out and the two new ones. Is there one you’re most excited for people to hear? I know you’ve been teasing “double down” for a minute.
Yeah, I feel like “double down” is the one I’ve gotten the most reaction from people about. “every song is about you” hasn’t really been promoted at all either, so I’m excited to see what the reaction to that will be [like]. I really love that song. I wrote [“every song is about you”] by myself in my room when I was 16, along with “naive,” so those two are really special to me. I’m very curious what people are going to think about about “every song is about you” — it’s a bit of a vibe shift. It’s a bit of a vibe shift. As for “double down,” [it] has such a unique melody and storyline that I’m very proud of, and [I] feel people resonate with [it]. It’s been fun to watch on socials, and I’m excited for everyone to hear it top to bottom.

Can you talk about the inspiration behind “double down”?
The day we wrote it, I’d been writing about the same situation for a long time and was tired of it. I wanted this project to feel like a body of work where all the songs lead into the next. The first line I said was, “Cigarettes on my lips all the time / I’ve told you, you should probably quit.” For me, that means being in a toxic relationship, where I’m begging someone to stop talking to other people. But we’re continuing this horrible cycle.

I wrote it with Hunter Metts, who I love dearly. We had the concept of looking back on a toxic relationship cycle and coming to the conclusion, “This is over, and I’m going to double down and move on.” It was so healing to write. Melodically, it’s a shift from anything I’ve written before. I’m eager to get everyone’s take on it because, top to bottom, it’s a really cool song.

Did you know early on that you wanted five songs on the EP?
Not really. It’s been crazy. I recorded eight songs for the EP and started weeding out what felt right. I wanted this chapter to feel cohesive, and it took time to figure that out. I’ve never been in a studio before or worked with writers or producers, so it was a journey learning how to communicate what I was feeling. Ultimately, we ended here, and I’m very excited.

Why did you close the EP with “every song is about you“? And why name the project after it?
From the beginning, I knew I wanted to name this project every song is about you because it encapsulated exactly what I was going through. When I wrote it, I was in bed thinking, “I can’t stop writing about this situation. It feels like every song is about you.” It just clicked. It felt impactful and straightforward. It ties the project together, especially with the last line: “Every song is about you.” It felt like tying a bow on the project.

The cover art is in black and white. How did that come about, and how does it tie everything together?
For a long time, I was trying to figure it out. At one point, the cover was supposed to be high school pictures with a bunch of guys around me — really aggressive and pop. But that wasn’t the vibe. Eventually, I realized this needed to be simple and organic, like the songs themselves. I wrote some of them alone as a teenage girl figuring out life. The cover was shot in my Nashville apartment kitchen. It feels pure, like a base I can go anywhere from. It’s a perfect opening to my journey.

Obviously, with two new songs, what are you hoping fans will take away from listening to the whole thing and gaining those two songs? And how are you feeling moving forward?
From the beginning, all of these songs really felt like the process of grieving this toxic person, place, thing, environment. It was so healing for me to write, and I hope that people get the same out of it from listening. It just feels very real. I hope people feel that way when they listen to them. It feels like a pretty bow on the end of it. I’m eager for everyone to hear all the new stuff we’ve been working on, too, because I’m very proud of it. It feels like we’re growing, changing and healing, and I want everyone to do that with me, too.
