Singer-songwriter Avery Lynch is back with her delicate new single, “Rain.” This new single, released alongside her stripped-down vocal demo, follows her recent project, As Written, Vol 2.
The singer began learning piano at age 7 before stringing together vocal compositions a year later. With years of experience under her belt, she combines her talents to deliver rich vocals alongside careful piano melodies across her tracks.
In “Rain,” Lynch pairs dainty, raw keys with her soft, wispy vocals at the forefront. It is not until the second verse where strings begin to creep in. This track builds instrumentally with cellos, edging towards a violin breakdown. With a cinematic arrangement cultivating the feel of a waltz in the rain, her tender vocals shine above them all.
Lynch yearns for closure in “Rain” as she finds it difficult to let go of a past flame, dwelling on the ways in which he cannot be replaced by newer experiences and new people. She lingers on the idea that this new person does not bring her the same joy she once had with her ex, singing, “no sparks fly when he says my name.” Despite her retrospective desire, she also acknowledges, “we’re not meant to be where we are,” proposing the idea that, while broken up, they are not meant for each other.
Fundamentally, Lynch knows that she cannot do anything to remedy the dynamic between the two. Disheartened, she sings, “guess I’m not fine / What I’d do to stay / If I knew how to make it rain.”
Avery Lynch’s newest single “Rain” covers not only her honest contemplation, but also displays her raw, romantic vocals and humbly theatrical worldbuilding in sound. With a sound and lyricism similar to that of Lizzy McAlpine, ROSIE and Rosie Darling, Lynch is setting herself up to become an exceptional talent.
