Why Don’t We alum Jonah Marais marks a shift from his classic boy band sound with his latest single, “Slow Motion,” a track that incorporates freestyle rap and is about meeting a girl who is able to slow everything down. This release follows The Jonah Marais Mixtape, which featured lead single “Twisted Lullaby,” which cemented Marais’ signature pop-rock sound.
Savoring moments of communication and intimacy amidst a fast-paced world is difficult for anyone, and for Marais, he wants to hit pause. “Slow Motion” blends Marais’ familiar pop-rock structure with freestyle rap that builds throughout the chorus. Lyrics like “Everyone I know runs, at the speed of light” reflect his desire to escape the chaos, as he repeats the refrain, “Everyone slow motion.” The song contrasts the rush of everyday life as Marais wants to press pause and just have fun.
Coming off a successful 15-city headline tour, Marais is gearing up for his highly anticipated debut solo album, set to release next summer. Collaborating with GRAMMY Award-winning producer and writer Ryan Lewis and acclaimed director Jason Koenig (known for his work with Ed Sheeran, Imagine Dragons and Macklemore), Marais is set to showcase his evolving sound.
While he may have tried to run from his twisted lullaby in the past, Marais is now slowing things down and putting things into second gear, setting things up for an exciting blend of genres next summer.
