It was only last year when Canadian alternative artist Ash Molloy came onto the scene with the release of her first two singles, “Viv” and “I Knew.” While both were different in style, with “Viv” containing a spunky alt-rock sound and “I Knew” unfolding as a tender piano ballad, they both showcased Ash’s honesty and vulnerability as a songwriter. This year, Ash followed up the singles with the release of four new tracks, further expanding her repertoire and her reputation as an unfiltered artist. Her songs send important messages out to the listeners, and her eclectic sound shows that she will not be confined to one genre. She is now ready to head into 2025 as strong as ever, but she still has some new music to share with us before 2024 is up.
With “Breakdown,” Ash flirts with the idea of self-sabotage. She fights her bad habits throughout the track, constantly wanting to make wrong decisions and repeat tired tendencies. All the while, a revved-up rock attitude comes through in the stop-and-go instrumentals and downward-bending melodies. By the time we get to the second iteration of the chorus, where Ash sings, “I just wanna lose myself inside another breakdown,” her angst and frustration really hit home. She is truly on the verge of a breakdown.
About “Breakdown,” Ash explains,
“It’s so much easier to let go and go off the rails, even when we know it’s not the right choice. In ‘Breakdown,’ you experience that inner conflict — how we might learn what we need to do to avoid a breakdown yet still find ourselves slipping back into those old habits. It’s a reminder of how challenging it can be to prioritize our mental well-being, even when we know better.”
