Up-and-coming pop punk band Too Close For Comfort rely on modern pop punk sounds to deliver their sixth single of the year, “NUMB TO IT ALL.” They bring an intense interpretation of sound similar to pop punk acts like Bring Me The Horizon, Neck Deep and The Wonder Years.
With their debut album, We Only Live On This Planet For So Long, released in 2022, the band have come together to release a host of new singles as they craft their upcoming sophomore album, I’m Not Alone Anymore, featuring the array of hardcore genres they seem to blend throughout their music.
This track covers a blend of genres. First, they infuse techno to distort the confines of pop punk guitars alongside vocal synthesizers. Tyler Pfeifer, the band’s lead singer, comes to the forefront in the chorus while intertwining hoarse screamo harmonies with his emo-esque vocal. These vocals set the tone for the track, but Evan Dini’s drums coupled with Ryan Gilpin’s consistent guitar riffs maintain the pace and energy of the genre.
“NUMB TO IT ALL” captures a desire to stay in one’s own lane, or to stay “numb,” to avoid feeling conflicted with the issues that surround oneself: “What I know is my truth.” The band aims to let go of the pain to look for more proactive alternatives: “Out with the old, in with the new / Leave the past /… find a different point of view.”
They begin the chorus with an unfortunate sentiment, “I’m losing myself and what it’s like to feel,” as they reflect on their emotional distress. Their difficulty with grasping change, singing, “it’s a never ending cycle,” leads them into seemingly unavoidable pain. Despite feeling like they are confined to their past, they chant, “refuse to follow, refuse to fit the mould,” to not allow themselves to revert back to a state they should not be in.
Too Close For Comfort are setting up an eclectic range of rock and punk elements with “NUMB TO IT ALL,” relying on pop punk tropes in their track, as they lead into their upcoming sophomore album.
