The Toronto trio Black Paint looks like they’re about to help you paint your new kitchen in their black coveralls when they’re really delivering garage rock on a silver platter, attempting to deliver as their predecessors did. Sounding like they have drawn inspiration from bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Raconteurs, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, this slashing track will make your ears ring: “I know when you’re down / Because you’re so done talking / ya you know I’m around / I’m still here when you walk in / Blame it all on love / Put it all on me / Know when you’re down / It burns through me.”
The band is made up of Steven Layzell (vocals/guitar), Tyler Smith (bass) and Eric Croteau (drums). Their new single, “All Bad,” classically derives from some sort of burning desire: looking for something or someone to blame for bad behavior due to being lovesick. The song falls a bit flat, with not much risk being taken.
The single promises a foundational base of where the band can go with upcoming releases. With a producer like Brian Moncarz (Alice Cooper, Our Lady Peace) and mastering engineer Brian Lucey (The Black Keys, Cage The Elephant), their listeners should buckle up in hopes of another “Born Again.”
