Nick de la Hoyde confronts his inner “Monster” in new single

Date:

Sydney-based pop rock artist Nick de la Hoyde delivers vulnerable new single, “Monster.”

He has a lengthy history in music, having been featured in a number of television shows and competitions. He was also a finalist at the International Songwriting Competition for numerous years and won the pop album category of the 2020 edition of the Independent Music Awards for his debut album, A Beautiful Mess. Nick de la Hoyde exemplifies his songwriting talents and crisp vocals.

Written along with Joseph and Tony de la Hoyde and produced by D.E.L., de la Hoyde offers heartfelt contemplation on the demons that live inside him, brought to life through monumental choruses filled with powerful crescendos. The song begins with a delicate duet with a piano before erupting into chaotic guitars and deep, emotionally-charged drums and bass. The song finally concludes full-circle with stripped piano. Its sound was inspired by ‘90s alternative/rock bands like Radiohead and Pixies.

The song’s themes cover confronting inner demons. De la Hoyde alternates between confessing his grievances through lyrics such as, “There’s a monster in my head / That won’t leave,” and personifying this monster, begging it to leave him alone with lyrics like, “I’d love for you to leave / Oh, can’t you see what you’re doing to me?” Ultimately, de la Hoyde confronts this monster, asking for it to give him some peace, saying, “I wish I could take a moment and relax / But it’s harder than it seems,” before acknowledging the way his mind has negatively affected him in, “look what you’re doing to me.”

Nick de la Hoyde is using his new single “Monster” to create a dialogue about the issues he faces, taking the chance to characterize his struggles to hopefully weaken their hold on him. Fundamentally, this new rock-ballad track completely exemplifies de la Hoyde’s maturity as a songwriter and as a vocalist.

Somewhere at the intersection between my love for music and my love for writing lies my passion for music journalism. While the title still seems silly, the ability to capture an artist's creation and share it with the world will never cease to excite me. As a psychology student, I continue to be fascinated with the underlying mechanisms of the human condition. What better way to understand the human mind if not through a person's art?
