What scares you the most? Spiders? Snakes? The unknown? We all are susceptible to fear, as fear comes in all shapes and sizes. But no matter how big or small this fear is, it is important to never let it consume you. As we have heard time and time again from ROSIE, it is okay to be scared. She has opened up about her issues, her mental health, and her biggest fears in life, channeling pure emotion into songs like “Big Heart” and “Try Again.” Sometimes, when you boldly face your fears, you are able to move on from them. This concept has inspired ROSIE’s latest EP, What Scares Me The Most, which contains the previously mentioned tracks along with a few others. In the end, it is not about what scares you, but how you grow from those fears.

Each track on What Scares Me The Most touches on various fears held by ROSIE, from fear of mental health (“I Was Wrong”) to fear of loss (“Try Again”) to fear of not being loved (“Blood Moon”). Guided by the gentle strums of acoustic guitar and the enlightening yet minimal sounds of percussion, she gives us lines like, “Had my first panic attack after I turned 13,” and “I’m scared I’ll never feel like I’m enough / That I’m a little too fragile to love,” showing that her fears are not interchangeable. Still, she finds a way to embrace these fears and own them. As we hear on “Big Heart,” she is not afraid to tell someone about her deepest feelings, singing, “Before I let you get too close / There’s a couple things you need to know.” She then proceeds to lay out her issues, knowing that it is better to share them than hide them away.

The last few tracks on the EP continue to follow ROSIE as she comes into her own, even if she still encounters various fears along the way. On “Lose Me Too,” she tackles the fear of losing herself in the aftermath of a breakup. She tells this other person, “So, if you’re really leaving, let me know / You can pack all of your things and go / But you can’t take Bon Iver / My long, brown hair,” choosing to still enjoy the aspects of her life that she had shared with this person. There’s also “Break A Promise,” where she walks us through her fear of falling in love. While she always thought she would avoid the type of person she is falling for, claiming, “I always keep my word, I always try to tell the truth,” she considers breaking her promise and following her heart.

It is ironic that ROSIE then closes the EP with “Rock Bottom,” as she seems to be anywhere but there by the end of the project. The song reflects this, as it reviews all of the life lessons that ROSIE has picked up over the years. She shares how she has been able to find the positive in certain situations and can appreciate what she has and what she has overcome. As she sings, “No one saw the quiet tears,” we can better understand where she is coming from because there are times when your only option is to hide your pain. ROSIE chooses to not hide this pain any longer, to move away from rock bottom, and to become the truest version of herself.

About the EP, Rosie explains, What Scares Me The Most is about facing, confronting, and overcoming my biggest fears. Each song represents a different fear, but as a whole, this project is about all of the good that comes from doing the things that scare us the most. Where there is fear, there is an opportunity to turn it into love and confidence, and that is the biggest lesson I’ve taken away from creating this project.” Fear is not the easiest emotion to battle or confront, but ROSIE makes it seem so effortless. She sings from her heart on these songs, spilling her emotions in a way that is honest and relatable. With this EP, listeners will believe that the best thing you can do in life is face your fears because there will always be an important message to take from the experience.
