Lauren Mayberry announces debut solo album ‘Vicious Creature’ and 2025 North American Tour

Date:

Scottish singer-songwriter Lauren Mayberry, frontwoman of the acclaimed electro-pop band CHVRCHES, has announced her debut solo album, Vicious Creature, coming this Dec. 6 through Island Records.

The album represents a new artistic chapter for Mayberry as she explores themes of sexuality and empowerment from a personal perspective, inspired by influences like Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, PJ Harvey, Kathleen Hanna and 1990s British girl groups All Saints and Sugababes.

The latest single, “Crocodile Tears,” follows Britpop-inspired “Something in the Air” and previously released tracks “Shame,” “Change Shapes” and “Are You Awake.” Collaborating with Matthew Koma and Ethan Gruska, Mayberry has embraced a bold voice, rejecting the idea of always needing to be “nice.” She reflects, “If I didn’t have to be seen as ‘nice,’ I’d feel comfortable telling certain people to f*** off when they treat me like s*** – on this record, and in these songs, I get to do that.”

Mayberry sees Vicious Creature as a journey to reconnect with her intuition and creative independence, pushing her artistry to a new level of truth and theatricality. Musicals like Cabaret and Chicago also influenced the album’s aesthetic, exploring darker, subversive sides of femininity. She explains, “I wanted ownership over my physical self and involvement in the visuals, putting myself in the driving seat of the aesthetic.”

Alongside the album release, Mayberry will embark on a North American tour, Vicious Creature Tour, in early 2025, starting Jan. 28 at San Diego’s House of Blues, with stops in cities like Chicago, New York City, Austin and Los Angeles. You can learn more and buy tickets here.
