Up-and-coming alternative rock singer-songwriter Dela Kay is channeling femme-foward alt rock acts like Avril Lavigne, Maggie Lindemann and Paramore in her newest single, “The One.”
“The One” follows the release of her debut EP, Falling Into Place, which was released in July. The LA-based songwriter is getting to the core of the pop-punk infused rock to let out her frustration in her new music. This electric guitar-driven track carries an energetic drum beat reminiscent of heartbroken pop-rock tracks from bands like The Maine or Against The Current.
Kay’s soprano voice keeps the essence of femme-fronted pop rock acts from this era, pairing perfectly with the personal undertones of the track. The track relies on beloved rock tropes, so much so as to strip down into an acoustic chorus in place of a bridge to lead into the final chorus.
Co-written and produced with friend Stefano Pigliapoco, this new single captures the frustration that comes with pouring excessive energy into a relationship that only ends in despair. Kay delves further into the themes of this track:
“Sometimes the people we love most aren’t ready for the kind of relationship we’re looking for. We’re forced to walk away, even if it ‘hurts too much’ or even if we thought they were ‘the one.’”
Kay dives into the exhausting nature of weighing the pros and cons of investing in someone who inevitably betrays you. She sings, “Wanna make this work but you’re breaking my sanity.” She dwells on her thoughts, knowing she cannot verbalize how she is feeling, telling this person, “Craving your touch but / I know your mind is out of reach.” Kay continues this thought in the chorus, reiterating this betrayal in, “beg for my trust then trade it for somebody else.”
“The One” captures the essence of many alt-rock acts that have come before, but the singer’s writing stands out most. This new era for Dela Kay is just beginning with many more projects to come.
