Australian new-age pop-punk singer, Christos, delivers introspective lyrics in his new single, “yesterday.”
Using rasp-filled spoken-word over indie acoustic guitar-driven melodies, “yesterday” captures an essence similar to stripped down XXXTENTACION or Juice WRLD with vocal inflections similar to that of MGK or The Kid LAROI. Christos’ new single stands out from his previous work for its lighter musical tone while also staying true to his core as an artist. He still leans into rap and upbeat rhythms to stay in tune with his sound.
Despite the upbeat tone of this song, Christos uses this track to reflect on his mental health and the consequences it faces for being a musical artist, before ending on a much more hopeful note. Christos shares:
“Throughout the track, I touch on the sacrifices that come with having a music career, how I’ve struggled with opening up in my life, and misconceptions people looking from an outside view have. Although starting off in a state of sorrow, I wanted to end this song on a hopeful note, encouraging myself and others to pick themselves up and keep going.”
The song begins on the reflection of how Christos has been putting off taking care of himself and pushing others away with lyrics like, “I’m still putting myself through hell.” He ponders the procrastination of prioritizing himself, offering up excuses like, “I don’t need to do half of the things I do / I’m just trying to please all of you.”
He continues on this thought into the following verse, where he reflects on the ways he shields his own emotions from the people he cares about because, “I don’t want to put that burden on anybody but me.” He also emphasizes how “not everything is always as it seems” as he grapples with expressing his true feelings.
The song ends on a positive note with, “pick yourself up / Give it one more shot” as the singer not only tells himself to resolve his difficulties, marking a turning point in his mental health, but also urging anyone who feels the same way to follow suit.
Christos’ new single is setting him up for a meaningful future of self-discovery in his upcoming projects.
