Spinning tackles vulnerable storytelling in “Winter”

Date:

Up-and-coming pop punk band Spinning is reflecting on the beauty of growing up in their new single “Winter,” released in anticipation of the band’s debut album. The song was jointly released with an additional single “A Song for Mary Jane.”

“Winter” captures the essence of the pop punk genre. With electric guitar-driven melodies, high-energy drums, an electrifying guitar solo, and drawn out syllables on vocals, this single reflects many bands that have come before them, such as Neck Deep or The Story So Far

The band shines on their songwriting. Their introspective lyrics display deep reflection and vulnerability in watching time pass. With compelling lyrics like, “I keep on looking over my shoulder / Winter comes and I’m feeling colder,” and “I’m wasting all of my time / Spinning out in my mind,” the band meditates on the anguish that stems from anxiety.

The singer repeatedly pleads, “Will you please pick up the phone?” reflecting not just his anxiety, but also begging for connection to voice his concerns.

With lines like, “I just can’t find stability / Still fighting who I should be,” we see how he questions his prospects and the life he wants for himself. However, he comes to realize how, despite time passing and growing up, his desires are far from satisfied. He is conscious that no matter what deviations on his journey he may have faced, his compass will always reorient back to his North Star: “I thought that this dream was over / But I just keep getting older.”

The band elaborates on this idea:

“This song came from a place of anxiety. It’s about getting older and about regret you might have, but also the wisdom and clarity you’re given once you experience more life, and are able to look back at things that have happened to you with a clearer view. I think that comes with time passing. I mention that “I thought that this dream was over, but I just keep getting older” and I’m talking about this band; the idea that I thought this band was done once we took a break during the pandemic, and that not doing it anymore might give me some sort of space to find myself in a different way, but I realized after all that time, I’m just an older version of that kid who started this band 10 years ago, I’m just older. I still love making music and I always will, and this dream of playing music with my best friends will never be over.”

While the title still seems silly, the ability to capture an artist's creation and share it with the world will never cease to excite me.
