Maddie Regent romanticizes heartbreak on “You could break my heart”

Date:

When we last heard from Maddie Regent, she was experiencing a classic case of self-sabotage on her new single “Sleeptalking.” Released in August, “Sleeptalking” leaned into negativity and self-doubt, with Maddie wishing that a good thing in her life would fall short. Instead of finding a way to change how she saw the situation, she wanted it to disappoint her just to justify her feelings. It was an exemplary display of her escapist and vulnerable style, and a thrilling start to the next chapter of her music. She is now following up the track with “You could break my heart.”

A melancholy ballad, “You could break my heart” romanticizes heartbreak. When you fall in love, you fantasize about your life with your special someone. For the most part, you might not see any issues, any problems… All is as rosy as ever, even the eventual breakup – and this is what Maddie focuses on. Over the tender notes of the piano, acoustic strums, and the rise and fall of strings, she sings, “You could break my heart / I wouldn’t get a revenge bod / Maybe only a haircut / Something to keep it fresh” and “You could break my heart / I wouldn’t hold it against you.” As much as it would pain her for this love to end, she is accepting of it, making the track devastating yet beautiful.

Telling us more about “You could break my heart,” Maddie explains,

“‘You could break my heart’ is about the helplessness that comes with falling in love—how we give someone our heart, knowing full well that they could break it. Sometimes love makes us blind enough to romanticize the heartbreak.”

You can listen to “You could break my heart” on platforms like Apple Music, SoundCloud, and Spotify.
