Ella Rosa looks for a bit of “FUN” on new single

Date:

It’s possible that if Ella Rosa hadn’t moved from the English countryside to the streets of New York City when she was 11 years old, she might not be the rising dance-pop phenomenon she is today. As she got used to life in another country, she remedied her feelings of homesickness through music. During her college years, she would find herself at underground parties, connecting with various DJs and lending her vocals to riveting EDM tracks. Her passion for creating prompted her to explore this side of herself more thoroughly, so she returned back to the U.K. during her third year of college. Once there, she began to tap into her own sound and form a new identity as an artist.

Today, she is based in Los Angeles and making waves in the pop scene. Not only has she worked with top producers like Anwar Sawyer (Audrey Nuna, Rihanna) and CAMBO (Steve Lacy, Doja Cat), but her 2023 single “OFF+ON” with veggi hit 1M streams. Fans and music critics alike are impressed by her edgy aura, her expressive music, and her cool aesthetic, making her an artist to watch in the pop and electronic scene. Still, there were times when life was not that edgy and cool for Ella, and she elaborates on this in her new single, “FUN.”

A genre-blending mix of U.K. garage, R&B, and bedroom pop, “FUN” brings listeners into an eclectic, exhilarating world. Ella’s dreamy pop vocals dance around the skittering, unsettled beats, bringing instances of light between the fast-paced riffs. All the while, she describes a lonely and detached period of her life, giving us lines like, “She can’t be alone / There’s no money left at home / And it shows.” As she muses about how much “fun” this period was for her, listeners can’t help but feel moved by the dance energy that comes through. You can check it out below.

About “FUN,” Ella shares,

“I came up with the concept of ‘FUN’ when things were not fun at all. I had just moved to a daunting new city and felt pressure to fit in with the ‘cool kids.’ I fell into a weird little crowd and discovered a mischievous side to myself I actually grew to love. I wrote the song in third person because, at the time, I struggled with dissociation, and it felt like I was watching my life unfold from the sidelines. I wanted that feeling of eerie detachment to come through in the music, which is why the track almost sounds spooky.”

You can listen to “FUN” on platforms like Apple Music, Spotify, and SoundCloud.
