This past Friday, 20-year-old alt-pop artist brooke collaborates with Finland-based producer Zone Diem to release electro-pop single “you watch me break.” The song, perfect for fans of Charli xcx’s BRAT, is a synth-pop anthem that is meant to paint a longing and sober portrait of self-actualization in relationships among Gen Z’s dating scene.
brooke begins her latest single by describing a toxic relationship with lyrics like “You’re poision creeping in” and “If I’m standing in your way, tell me to my face / Your motive is so jaded / Can’t give you what you traded.” It’s clear that her partner isn’t giving brooke the honesty she thinks she deserves. However, by the end of the song, brooke realizes “I’m losing every time.” With her lyricism, she takes listeners on a journey of what it’s like to be in a situationship where the other person doesn’t intend to support or care for you.
The Boston native’s song is a delight to listen to as brooke’s choppy vocals and glistening harmonies create a bed of eagerness over Zone’s piercing 808s and arpeggios. As you listen to brooke sing, “You watch me break / I’m suffocating and I’m standing in your way,” you can’t help but be mesmerized by the hook. Diem intended to create a sound that will lead listeners to romanticize their failed situationships while also guiding them into a BRAT-inspired fall thanks to brooke’s vocals and lyricism.
This fall, brooke plans to release her debut EP Away Today in which she will explore her experience of what it’s like to be queer in a binary world with songs that will embrace angst, excitement, and creativity. So be sure to stay tuned for more music from brooke if you want to be one of the first fans to experience what she has to offer in pop. In the meantime, check out her other singles “All I Ever Wanted” and “Alarming.”
