In this delicate new single, Kylie Spence reflects on her meaningfulness to a past partner.
“Shoebox” is the third and lead single off of Spence’s debut album, Everything and Nothing, which was recorded in Nashville, where she is currently based. The Montana-raised singer is testing her artistic abilities on this new project, as she not only has songwriting credits on all of her songs, but co-produced them as well. Spence co-produced “Shoebox” with Tim Bruns, Elliot Blaufuss, and Gabriel Rabben.
The 23-year-old’s creative ability does not end there. Spence also developed a stop-motion lyric video for the new single, scrapbooking a number of retrospective photos and notes to emulate the collection of memories she dwells on in her lyrics. The art in the video, photography, filming and editing of the entire video was all done by Spence.
The lyrics are where she shines the most as her voice is accompanied by quiet acoustic strings. She sings, “I wonder if I still exist to you,” as she questions if her ex-partner still thinks of her and the moments they once shared. In fact, when tucking away her memories in a shoebox in the back of her closet, Spence leaves hints and clues so as to get this person to remember her. She lists off being kept in their wallet or lingering like perfume to be reminded of her presence in their life.
She goes as far as to implant herself in their memories as she sings, “Do I still sit on the dash / A reminder to slow down / If you can help it.”
The song stands out in Kylie Spence’s discography as one that is steady in its tone, shifting the focus away from the instrumentation and more on her wavering voice to indicate the bruised emotions she faces. With a sound similar to Gracie Abrams, Chelsea Cutler and Maisie Peters, “Shoebox” is a delicate and heartfelt track worth checking out from her newest debut album, Everything and Nothing.
