Delivering a punchy and fuzz-infused approach to rock and roll, Taipei Houston has proven to be a hard-hitting force since their 2021 formation. Composed of brothers Layne and Myles Ulrich along with Kai Smith, Taipei Houston originally consisted of just the Ulrich brothers when they released their debut album Once Bit Never Bored in 2022 via C3 Records. The record served as an explosive introduction into the music scene for the duo, who originally studied music in New York while bringing the garage-rock outfit to life.

With Layne on vocals and bass and Myles on drums, Taipei Houston was a fuzzy, buzzy and highly energetic force of nature despite an initial lack of a guitarist. Reminiscent of groups like the White Stripes or Arctic Monkeys, Taipei Houston was a refreshing dose of unbridled energy that the rock scene very much needed.

Over their years as a group, Taipei Houston has made festival appearances at Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Download and Aftershock. They’ve shared the stage with a large number of iconic artists, and are now currently on tour supporting English rock group Nothing But Thieves throughout this fall.

After releasing their debut album in 2022, Taipei Houston released a new single in 2023, a bass-heavy cover of the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” — a common setlist staple for the band and one of the first songs they decided to post on YouTube. Since then, Taipei Houston has focused on touring — until last week, when the group wiped their Instagram page with an ominous message of “Soon.” Yesterday, Taipei Houston announced they would be releasing a new single “Braindeaf” this Friday.

Now decorated in a world of dusty deserts, cowboy boots and lost highways, it seems the band is now taking on a rugged, Western-inspired approach to their signature high-intensity sound. Even from just a sneak peak of the new track that was posted on socials, it is evident that Taipei Houston is continuing to expand upon their iconic musicality while also bringing it to the next level.

Renowned for the power that their sound and live shows bring, both new and seasoned Taipei Houston listeners will be excited to see what comes next from the alt-rock outfit. Although new aesthetics are seeming to be adapted, there’s no change when it comes to Layne’s masterful skill of the four-string axe or Myles’ ferocity when it comes to his drumming.
