Singer-songwriter Medium Build, whose real name is Nicholas Carpenter, will release his new EP, Marietta, which is scheduled to be released on Nov. 15 via Slowplay/Island Records.
The project is named after Marietta, a town near Atlanta, Georgia, where Medium Build grew up. The songs on the EP reflect pivotal moments from his upbringing, touching on themes like his parents’ search for opportunity, his complex relationship with the church, and the emotional turbulence of his teenage years.
To support the forthcoming EP, Medium Build has also released a new track “Triple Marathon,” which explores themes of longing and the struggle for genuine intimacy. He mae the song with friend Cooper Holzman at his place in East Los Angeles, and was mixed and mastered Jimmy Mansfield and Adam Grover.
About the new single, Medium Build wrote:
“Triple marathon is about a relationship-situationship-friendship thing where I just felt so desperate for this person’s approval and love and time and attention. I oscillated between feeling it was the best thing I’d ever had and thinking I was being used and abused and mistreated. I think we all end up in things that are confusing, grey areas of self-doubt. Never knowing if we’re setting boundaries or being an asshole, anticipating needs or being a doormat. I still love this person and maybe it will work one day. Maybe it won’t. But the feeling was there and I wrote it down. It’s always funny to read my own lyrics to see how pathetic I was. You never know how someone feels, do you?”
Previously, Medium Build released his full-length album, Country (2024) to critical acclaim. The EP’s artwork, featuring images from Carpenter’s hometown, includes photos of the street where he grew up and the now-abandoned Sears where his father used to work.
