Indie pop artist Thomas Ortiz released “Damn Lonely” on Sept. 21 to describe how he no longer wants to be used by someone he loved. He brings listeners along on his journey of realizing he needs to exit the relationship for his own self-respect.
He begins his song with a chill melody that has a medium tempo as he sings in his first verse “It’s a fact / That you had me running around like a track star” and “Using up my love for your validity” to set up to listeners the story of how he was just a backup plan from someone else. As the chorus approaches, the bass goes and the tempo speeds up and he belts out “Lovin’ you just felt so damn lonely.”
In the second verse, he sings about how he felt he was just kept around to make another guy jealous as he sings “You had in me in the dark for attention.” His hurt is clear in the bridge when he sings “Even though I wanted you / I’m still picking up the pieces of my heart” full of emotion. With some reverb in his voice, a great melody is created.
Overall, the Massachusetts artist proves he is capable of producing vulnerable music as he shows listeners how he came to realize he needed to leave a relationship even though he wanted their attention and affection. It’s clear he isn’t scared to share his experiences with fans in his art.
