Stella. holds back no hatred in new single “Friendly Reminder”

Date:

The foundation of Stella.‘s new single, “Friendly Reminder,” is a breathy pop race to let that one ex know how you really feel about them. With the upbeat drum rhythm, sweet synths, and a remarkably similar voice to John Mayer, the single is the type of instant indie hit you’d hear every day on the way to work on the radio: “I just want to say / If I had water to waste / I wouldn’t put you out if you were on fire / So lets get it straight / case you ever forget how we left it / Here’s a friendly reminder / I hate you babe.”

Stella. is thrilled to start sharing his music once more after a three-year break. He has released a series of singles that led up to his second EP, A Study in Balance, followed by his first full-length LP shortly thereafter.

From start to finish, the New York City singer presents a straightforward narrative—no surprises or hidden meanings—about the importance of expressing feelings when someone has wronged you, whether that person is an ex-friend, ex-partner, or ex-etc. While the soaring melodies might initially obscure Stella.’s message of anger, take a moment, and you’ll hear it loud and clear: “Honey if I had to choose / Between you or the noose / I’d tie the knot with my own two hands.”

The single also leans into self-reflection and care as Stella. knows their ex has done them wrong. Knowing his ex still wants him to stick around and work things out, he knows better than to be taken advantage of and controlled by a toxic situationship: “I know I always get attached to the wrong kind of love and I am working on that / I know you really want me bad / But I refuse to live in the palm of your hand.”
