Joe & The Anchor craft energetic pop in “Change”

Date:

“Please don’t be the one that got away.”

Along with their debut album Coming Of Age, Swedish indie-pop band Joe & The Anchor have released their fourth single from the LP, “Change” following their success with 2019 and 2021 EPs Antidote and Blue.

The band drew on their old-school influences, reinventing dad-rock favorites like U2 and Coldplay and bringing a fresh take on pop music. This fun, upbeat single follows an inviting excitement to its tone. The track itself is reminiscent of a mix between Inhaler and Lauv.

With up-tempo beats and sunny and catchy melodies, “Change” is arguably a quintessential pop song. The five-piece band blends an authentic sound with cheerful harmonies to capture a hopeful plea for a loved one to return. The track’s fun nature does not end there as not just a guitar solo but also a bass solo bridge choruses. Claps are also used in place of percussion leading into the final chorus, furthering the childlike excitement in the song.

According to the band, “Change” also encapsulates the essence of their sound on Coming Of Age

“The whole process of ‘Coming Of Age’ has felt like when we wrote music as teenagers in the rehearsal room, and we have gotten to recreate the unfiltered feeling of pure creativity, genuineness and joy that was the reason we found each other long ago.”

The song itself captures a plea for an ex-partner to return in hopes of starting anew, although disguised in amusing musical energy. We hear, “I swear to you / I’ll love you again / Just say the words / … If you’d like to change your mind.” While the song does feel like regaining a new lease on life, the singer is politely begging for a second chance.

As the band continues to release music, it is clear they are not going anywhere. Their energetic and formulaic pop music resides among many modern greats, and they are therefore one to watch!

Somewhere at the intersection between my love for music and my love for writing lies my passion for music journalism. While the title still seems silly, the ability to capture an artist's creation and share it with the world will never cease to excite me. As a psychology student, I continue to be fascinated with the underlying mechanisms of the human condition. What better way to understand the human mind if not through a person's art?
