For anyone who has been out and about in the London live music scene in the past year, you have most likely come across Slumber. The London indie rock band has been busy performing in venues like The Shacklewell Arms and The Old Blue Last, and even performed a sold-out show at The George Tavern with My Fat Pony and Wonderbug. Fans have also been buzzing about the band’s infectious energy and dynamic music, making Slumber a group that you don’t want to pass up. With their debut single, “Julian Casablancas (I Wanna Rock a Pair Like),” Slumber introduce more fans to their exciting world, giving listeners a song that they can proudly crank up at their next house party – or socially awkward gathering.
An outcast anthem, “Julian Casablancas (I Wanna Rock a Pair Like),” focuses on the longing to fit in with the “cool kids at the party.” Throughout the single, we hear about the effortless swagger that Julian Casablancas of The Strokes embodies, from his skinny jeans to his leather jackets. Over an animated and driving indie band production, we get lyrics like, “I don’t look cool smoking cigarettes / And no one ever compliments the way I dress / Everyone here knows each other / But no one seems to know me,” establishing a misfit vibe at this social gathering. You can check out the video below to see if a Julian Casablancas-level of style and attitude is achieved in the end.
About the single, Slumber shares,
“‘Julian Casablancas’ is a song about the pressure of London nightlife. That sense of feeling totally inadequate in a room of what always seems to be the coolest and hottest people you can possibly imagine. Of course, that’s much too vulnerable to say directly, so instead, we just offset it with a stupid joke about The Strokes and their jeans.”
You can listen to “Julian Casablancas (I Wanna Rock a Pair Like)” on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.
On October 5, Slumber will be headlining their very first show at the Sebright Arms. More information will be posted by the band closer to the event.
