Make Friends brings back the indie pop we’ve all been waiting for with new single “Maybe Tomorrow”

Date:

With layers reminiscent of an Arcade Fire classic, Make Friends’ new single, “Maybe Tomorrow,” boasts captivating melodies and a timeless indie-pop vibe. The track seamlessly travels through time from 2010 to today: “Tell me why I can’t see straight / I thought you liked it more this way / But now your face is starting to change / If I came back down to earth / Would I see this for its worth / Or not / I stop / I’m living a lie.”

“Maybe Tomorrow” was the last single released alongside the band’s new EP, Loaded Fun. It combines tasteful bits and pieces of The 1975 with the indie-pop of Bombay Bicycle Club, which makes perfect sense as it was co-written and produced with Bombay Bicycle Club’s Ed Nash.

From Bristol, United Kingdom, Tom Andrew (vocals, bass), David Thomas (guitar), Connor Crabb (guitar) and Max Lewin (drums) are no stranger to the spotlight. With an appearance on the prestigious BBC’s Maida Vale Studios live sessions, an opportunity for unsigned artists, they began gaining traction with songs like “Ellie,” the first to surpass half a million plays. The group has undoubtedly been making waves in the UK recently.

The electric atmosphere of this single alone portrays the sounds of MGMT as well. The band holds their own, though. “Maybe Tomorrow” perfectly combines the band’s uniqueness and impressive guitar work. Composer and lead Tom Andrew showcases precisely what he is capable of here and on the EP: “Keep me with you if you choose / Tell me what I’m supposed to do / With you / Now you’re not listening too / When you call me late at night / I’m sorry I ignored these times / I know you’ve gown / You’ll be alright.”

“Maybe Tomorrow” releases the aura of songs like “Daylight” by Matt and Kim, “Kyoto” by Phoebe Bridgers, and the complexity of the nuanced song “Bags” by Clairo. Focusing on the growing pains of past relationships or ones in troubled waters, the group executes the perfect healing track with lyrics like: “You’re working with your heart / And you’re helping your mind / Take a breath / But I’m losing my mind / I know it’s hard /  We wake up at the start.”
