Leprous took the stage at the progressive metal gathering in Atlanta at ProgPower USA XXIII as part of their Melodies of Atonement North American Tour, delivering nothing short of a mesmerizing performance, a testament to their status as one of the most innovative and dynamic bands in the progressive metal scene today. The penultimate set for the second night of the festival at Center Stage brought together fans from all walks of life, unified in their appreciation for the Norwegian group’s unique blend of technical mastery, emotional depth, and atmospheric soundscapes.
From the moment the band took the stage for the first time at ProgPower USA in over a decade, the energy was immersive. Opening with “Silently Walking Alone” from their new album, Melodies of Atonement, the cascading rhythms and haunting vocals of Einar Solberg set the tone for what would be a night of both intensity and introspection. Solberg’s incredible vocal range was on full display, moving effortlessly between soaring falsettos and powerful bellows, adding layers of emotion to the intricate atmosphere that the band is known for.
Guitarist Tor Oddmund Suhrke and bassist Simen Børven provided a beautiful blend of precise and haunting melodies, with complex riffs and abstract rhythms that are staples of Leprous’ sound. However, it wasn’t just technical skill that shone through, as there was a raw, emotive quality in their playing that resonated throughout the packed venue. Leprous played an incredible set, including “Forced Entry”, a sprawling, epic track that had the crowd entranced, and “Below,” which showcased Leprous’ ability to meld crushing heaviness with delicate, almost ethereal moments. Leprous left the audience hanging on every note.
Leprous’ light show was extraordinary to witness, as it was meticulously synchronized with the music, creating a moody ambiance that added an extra dimension to the performance, heightening the emotional impact of each song. It wasn’t just a visual spectacle but an integral part of the live experience, which captivated the crowd in a dark and eerie setting that set the tone for the symphonic sound of the Norwegian band.
Overall, Leprous’ performance at ProgPower USA 2024 was a reminder of why they have such a dedicated following, mixing in fan favorites with a sleuth of new music from their 2024 release. Their performance transcended a mere concert, delivering an emotional and sonic experience that stays with you long after the final note fades. A must-see for any fan of progressive music, Leprous continues to push boundaries and elevate their craft, proving that they are a force to be reckoned with in the live music scene. As the tour continues, Leprous should not be missed!
