Back in February, Celtic pop singer-songwriter Rose Betts released “War,” which was her first single of the year. At the time, I made a prediction that 2024 was going to be a good year for Rose, and so far, so good. She followed up “War” with “Take This Body Home” and “Come Away,” both of which tug at the heartstrings. Rose’s impeccable ability to put her emotions to engaging, sweeping music has resonated with fans, and in September, she will be able to connect with them in a new way. She will head out on her debut tour of the U.S., hitting up cities on both the west and east coasts. All in all, still so far, so good for Rose – even if there are a few “Doodles” she would like to erase in the process.
On Rose’s new single, “Doodles,” she reflects on various choices she has made in life. There are some that she would like to take back and some that she would change, but overall, she knows that making mistakes is natural and human. Using a simple, lilting melody that is easy to sing along to, Rose reveals, “‘Cause it’s one for the night when I broke his heart / One for the joke that I took too far / And it’s one for the dent in the rental car / The doodles I’d undo.” Her vocals are pure and uninhibited as she looks back on these moments, as if taking them all in stride. About “Doodles,” Rose shares,
“There comes a point in your 30s where you start to look back a bit more and, if you’re in a lighter mood, you can very clearly see the mistakes and laugh at them. The things that have gone wrong that you wish had gone a different way, that you can’t undo. The reality, of course, is that life is full of these things. It’s not tied into neat little bows along the way.
“What I love about Irish music is that it’s always treading on the bittersweet – sorrow and joy co-exist and are often simultaneous. Even though ‘Doodles’ is a flippant, fun song, it’s also about how drinking has two sides: you’re covering up something, maybe drowning something out, but you’re also letting something loose.”
You can listen to “Doodles” on platforms like Apple Music, Spotify, and SoundCloud.
In September, Rose will be heading out on her debut U.S. tour. The ‘Travelling Feet’ tour will kick off in Portland, Oregon, on September 12, make its way through cities like Los Angeles and Chicago, and then conclude in Vienna, Virginia, on October 12.
