Madisyn Gifford gets real about a guy who played her on “Fast One”

Date:

It was earlier on in the summer when Vancouver pop artist Madisyn Gifford released her first single of 2024, “Seventeen.” Lyrically, it focused on the strong and complicated feelings that emerge when diving into a new relationship, staying true to themes we have heard in Madisyn’s previous releases. Musically, however, the song leaned more into the folk realm. At the time, Madisyn shared, “I think this is honestly the sound that feels the most genuine to me as an artist, especially at this phase in my life!” It definitely was a solid fit for the song, and the beginning of an exciting chapter for Madisyn at this point in her career. As she continues to roll out her upcoming album, she explores this sound even further on “Fast One.”

Containing a pleasant production and a calm spirit, “Fast One” seems like a friendly track on the surface. We are treated to bright guitar riffs, cheerful whistling, and Madisyn’s relaxed vocals, yet the lyrics contain a darkness. Throughout the track, Madisyn vents about a guy who played her. She shares, “You weren’t really hungry for me / You were only bored” and “Stupid girl, always thinking she’s enough / Well, I hope I was at least your favorite flavor of the month.” In the end, she states, “Yeah, you pulled a fast one on me,” disappointed by his trickery.

Giving us more details on “Fast One,” Madisyn shares,

“I wrote the song ‘Fast One’ about two years ago after getting ghosted by a guy I liked. Relatable, I know. The song is essentially about all of the feelings of sadness, shame, and betrayal that can often come from situations like that but also the humor that can come out of them as well. It’s funny how, often times, it’s the two-month situationship that hurts more than the long-term breakup, and this song is me pointing that out. Sonically, we also wanted to highlight those contrasting emotions in the production. I think, in the song, you can sense the hurt but it also feels a bit tongue-in-cheek, which is exactly what we wanted!”

You can listen to “Fast One” on platforms like Apple Music, SoundCloud, and Spotify.
