Melodic Music Monday: September 2

Date:

Every Monday, we bring you a playlist filled with new tracks the Melodic staff has been listening to on repeat. Hear some of our latest obsessions below:

Noah Kahan, “Pain Is Cold Water” While his music still features twangy banjo and vulnerable lyrics, Kahan elevates these qualities in Noah Kahan (Live at Fenway Park) by explaining the meaning behind his songs and expanding on the musical elements in them. He creates a meaningful experience for his fans by inviting Gracie Abrams to perform his popular song, “Everywhere, Everything,” to playing “Maine” and “Mess” from his previous albums, playing his highly anticipated new song, “Pain Is Cold Water”, and embellishing the instrumentation from his previous recordings of Stick Season (We’ll All Be Here Forever) and Stick Season (Forever). Through these experiences, Kahan expresses his gratitude for his fans, friends, and family for supporting him along his musical journey.

Marianas Trench, “A Normal Life” The album opens on a grand overture, “A Normal Life,” a six-minute instrumental explosion fusing futuristic synths found in what can only be described as traveling lightyears through space in a sci-fi film with retrospective string arrangements. The epic layering of instruments and vocals situate the listener in the driver seat as they embark on the journey that is Haven. The song was originally released as a single in April, introducing a new era for Marianas Trench. This introduction is quite literally emphasized through lyrics like, “could leave tonight and run/And make a bitter fool of everyone.” The setting is introduced as the protagonist is ready to set off as not fitting in with the mundane lifestyle is taking a toll on his mental health: “Idle hands that long to spill/The dangers of standing still/…Someday, somewhere I’ll belong there/…Save me from this ordinary life.”

Daniel Seavey, “Other People” Daniel Seavey is making a powerful return with his new single, “Other People,” a heartfelt track that delves into the end of a tumultuous relationship against soft guitar strumming that builds in the chorus. The song showcases Seavey’s emotional lyricism and distinctive pop-rock vibes, creating a melancholic track that resonates deeply, especially during moments of reflection and sadness — a time otherwise known as sad hour.

daydreamers, “Don’t Delete My Number” – The band’s newest song, “Don’t Delete My Number” cleverly recalls “Call Me Up”, though completely coincidental. The songs were actually written last year, within months of one another. The new single is inspired by the tried and true (but not nearly as effective as we wish it was) no contact rule – a rule that no one seems to follow, despite its good intentions. Despite the song calling back to a seemingly toxic place, Riley talks about his headspace while writing and producing it. “Writing feels addictive because you can’t control it,” he says, which contrasts dramatically with production, whose purpose is to serve the song, to take it from better to best.
