Indie pop artist OAKLND released their lead single “chicago” on August 23 from their upcoming debut EP. For the second time, OAKLND collaborates with singer-songwriter and producer Lyncs to create an emotional song full of regret.
With an angelic voice, listeners can feel their hurt when OAKLND sings “‘Cause you were my whole life / but now I’m wasting mine” in the chorus over atmospheric sounds of The 1975 balanced with hazy alt pop.
It’s heartbreaking when they sing “now we only see each other on the internet.” The lyric is relatable since it’s not uncommon to go from being close with someone to now only seeing what they’re up to through social media.
The story behind the song is interesting as it was inspired by a short video OAKLND saw online. According to OAKLND, the video was about “a girl who was breaking up with her boyfriend cause she was moving to Chicago and he was moving somewhere else…it resonated with me so much.” Not only was he inspired to create “chicago” but he was also inspired to create his debut EP.
In order to write the track with Lyncs, the two artists worked over Zoom between LA and West Lothian. The last time the duo released a song together was in 2022 for “guess ur doing fine.”
