The multi-hyphenate ingenue YDE shares delicate vocals on heartfelt breakup song “Defense for Love”.
Australian actress, singer, songwriter and producer may be known for her diverse acting roles since her childhood, starring in Nickelodeon and Netflix series The Haunted Hathaways, School of Rock and Malibu Rescue, but she is making 2024 the year of her music career. The Warner Records artist is diving into introspection and wondering in her lyrics, but she dwells on her perspective on love in her most recent single, released on August 9th.
While she is known for her catchy and pop-esque tunes, the 21-year-old musician dips into crisp production to showcase her buttery voice, elevated by velvet harmonies. Co-produced with RISC, YDE sets an intimate atmosphere where her voice shines at the forefront, reminiscent of vocals from Julia Michaels and Selena Gomez.
While YDE’s vocal and production capabilities definitely shine in “Defense of Love,” her songwriting skills are also on display. Co-written with notable songwriter Justin Tranter, as well as Mattias Larsson and Robin Fredriksson, the team tackle the innocent and virtuous nature of love. YDE grapples with the idealized version of what love is expected to be as opposed to the universal, multifaceted, and divine truth to love as a concept and a spiritual guide.
YDE pens heartfelt lyrics expressing her desire to put herself first after someone betrayed her heart. She reminds herself that while she committed to a brittle relationship because of the desire for romantic love, her self-love should outweigh any temporary doubt. To further this message, she sings, “The love I give myself will make me more than fine / Growing up won’t ever be a smooth move / But I will try to.”
As she grows up and learns the meaning of love beyond her expectations, YDE is on her way to express her new perspectives on such a concept in this singer-songwriter stylized “Defense for Love.”
